The Royal Oak, Car Colston, Nottingham

East of the Fosse Way Roman road lies Car Colston, a village steeped in history. The large Conservation Area encloses the whole village of 180 people and 13 Listed Buildings or structures. It also includes indications of Bronze Age occupation, remains of a Roman villa (a Scheduled Ancient Monument), a series of medieval earthworks, croft boundaries and a square moat which once surrounded the Willoughby Manor House.
The building of The Royal Oak is about two hundred years old and is thought by some to have been a hosiery factory hence the rather unusual vaulted brick ceiling in the bar which certainly would have carried the weight of the appropriate textiles machinery above.

Route: From the A52/A46 junction head north towards Newark, exit A46 into Tenman Lane. Follow for 700yds Royal Oak on left. Look for NDA signs.

Dunham on trent is named after the saxon chief DUNA and ham meaning village. The village straddles the River Trent.  The original toll bridge opened in 1830 replacing the ferry which was regularly used by King John. in 1273 the village was granted certain privileges by royal charter The King held the village in such regard that he decreed that men from the village could never be convicted for murder or fined for any misdemeanours (this has probably been rescinded since. But worth checking out)
